What Did Elizabeth Went Through? Why Did She Come To Understand Her Mom's Situation? Was It Too Late?

Personal Reflection: ππ¬
- Everyone was once in the shoes of Elizabeth. Disagreeing and making fun of certain features or characteristics of their parent, based on the influences of certain things. Not knowing how they truly felt when those words escaped our mouth, we were cluelessly living on with our life without truly understanding all of the negative words or action that was once directed at our parent. As Elizabeth grew up, she was able to experience all kinds of things and participate in many situations both negative and positive, forcing her mindset to change as time progressed. She was able to understand the idea of the power dynamics between a man and a woman. Reflecting on many of the situations between her mother and father situation, Elizabeth realizes that her mother was completely trapped in a marriage that never once gave her the freedom to do many of the things she wished. Understanding the controlling nature of her father, Elizabeth slowly shies away from many of the practices her father often taught her growing up. Now that she understood how her mother felt after all those times, apologetic words were never enough to cover those wounds. Immigrants from many Asian countries often fantasize about the idea of marrying a white man from the United States. Never truly understanding the differences between them, they mindlessly follow those expectations that eventually lead to their downfall: chasing something that leads to a dream-crushing moment of their fantasy being lies after all this time. As someone who had lived in Vietnam for many years, I came to understand that Vietnamese woman often chased or vowed for a foreign man, specifically a white male, in hopes of getting many of the perks and reputations that comes with marrying a so-called man of power. Because that is what they blindly follow, many of them often reach or end up in the situation Elizabeth's mom was in: causing them to be depressed and hopeless of the future.
In-Class Discussion: ππ¨π’
- Knowing how women in Asian countries are was the main reason why I thought this situation between Elizabeth's Okinawan mom and her father was somewhat funny. At first, I just thought that she blindly chased a dream of her and many immigrant women often had just to be shattered at the end. Of course, now that I had finished with the story, I came to understand why and how she felt in listening to what many of my classmates discussed in class. However, that still does not dismiss the fact that she chose to follow that life not knowing the possible consequences. But at the end of the day, how much did she know about the evil nature of men in America? I was once awed by the many feats and ideas of living in the United States, seeing how everyone seemed to be happy and successful once they migrated to America: but I was wrong, just like her. There is limited information when it comes to those things and there are also times when information are falsely spread that would swirl up dreams and fantasy that would eventually come to falter when the time came. The world is a dangerous place, without knowledge of certain expectations things can turn south extremely quickly: just like Elizabeth's mother's life.
Thank you for your time ✌,
