Personal Interpretation: πŸ‘€πŸ’«

- The Secret Lives of Church Ladies is a book with multiple series of event that is divided throughout to further deepen the message of the entire book. We specifically looked at an event called "Eula," which is one of the short stories within the book revolving around the ideas of love between two women. What makes this interesting is not about the love itself, but rather the idea of it happening in the first place. This story was about a woman named "Caroletta" and another woman named "Eula." Caroletta visits her friend Eula to celebrate New Year's Eve, during which both eventually have some intimate time to show their lust and desire for one another. However, as the event goes on it is clear that Caroletta is the only one with deep feelings for Eula, while Eula was blindly following her desire to get a husband. It is clear that Eula was into women, but was not ready to accept the fact that she was that way. By speaking about the idea of getting a husband, despite the many failed attempted relationships she had with men, she hopes to change the way she is as a person. Caroletta knows that Eula is not ready to accept that fact, so in a way, she serves as this intimate doll that helps to satisfy Eula's sexual desire when the time comes. This idea in itself is extremely messed up, but there was nothing Caroletta could do other than love Eula from afar as she continued to ramble on about getting a husband: knowing quite well that she was not heterosexual. In the past, many often tried to cover a fact or features that were indeed them but were afraid of truly accepting it: fearing rejection in society. But nowadays with all of these gay rights movements, it is clear that a lot more individuals are starting to come out in truly represent who they are as a person: with a lot more support from society. It is never easy to truly accept something wrong with oneself. But by Eula doing so, eventually, she will break down or even go into depression if she does not come true to her feelings.

In-Class Discussion: πŸ˜–πŸ’

- Throughout the discussion regarding this short story in class, it is clear that many of my classmates seem to show some kind of empathy toward Caroletta situation rather than Eula's. I found that quite surprising to despise the fact that it is Eula who is mentally battling with her true nature as a human being. I come to understand that many of my classmates seem to show support for Caroletta because of her being in such a so-called "sad" situation, not being able to truly love someone because of their unwillingness to accept their situation. Personally, why can't Caroletta just move on or say those facts straight to Eula's face so that this madness can finally end? Well, it is probably because Caroletta also fears that fact in itself. She is afraid of hurting Eula, so that is why she has to endure that one-sided love filled with nothing but pain and sorrow.

Thank you for reading ✌,
